DWC Hydroponic System – Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic system is also known as “Lettuce Raft Method”. Why is it so? Because the basic concept for this system is simply plants are grown on a “raft” made of firm Styrofoam floating in a pool of nutrient-rich water. Accordingly, this method enables you to grow an abundance of small, lightweight crops such as lettuce, spinach, endives, or herbs such as basil, parsley and cilantro.

First, we have what we called the “raft”. This raft is consisted of a rigid Styrofoam platform. You have to cut it to fit the size of the reservoir as well as the “net pots” – a simple plastic container with holes in the bottom as the place for putting the growing medium and seedlings. For the medium, a lot of options can range from coconut coir, perlite or LECA (clay balls or labeled as Hydroton). You need to fill the growing medium for about ¾ full and then you can plant the seeds directly in those medium.

The next is the reservoir. It is a simply large container that used to keep the water. It has as least to be 1 ft. deep to be able to accommodate the root growth, sturdy, and in opaque mode to prevent algae growth. For example, you can use a storage bin to hold the solution. Other options, you can make your own reservoir – a wood box lined with plastic –, or easily but them at nearby grow or hydroponic shops, as well as the online ones. The complete equipment will also need proper nutrients and equipment for monitoring pH level of the water.

Lastly in DWC Hydroponic System , you need an aerator, a tool that has function to aerate the water and to make sure that the nutrients in the water do not become stagnant. The most popular and easiest alternative is an Air Stone. You can purchase it at any hydroponics or aquarium supply shops. How does it work? The stone has to be hooked up to a small single-outlet air pump, which is connected to the stone via air tubing and placed directly outside of the reservoir.
