Hydroponic Watermelon

Hydroponic Watermelon – An appealing slice of bright red and juicy watermelon is always a perfect choice in the hot summer time, to cool you down and ease your thirst. You will end up eating more than one slice after all! Yes, they are considered as summer fruits that love heat.

Not only heat loving plants, watermelons (as well as squash and cantaloupe) are considered as water-loving fruits. Accordingly, as they love water and can effortlessly adjust to any conditions, they can grow pretty fine in hydroponic methods.

Watermelon is considered a gigantic, rambling, sprawling plant. Indeed, due to their size, watermelons entirely need several special treatments in certain hydroponics methods.  However, all you need to do is give them extra care and attention related to the levels of appropriate nutrient solution, adequate light, and support for their weight.

As previously stated, watermelons need plenty of natural light. They are best grown outdoor plants or in greenhouses with full sun of several months to produce the expected crops. Concerning the number of plants, thus for more than two or three plants growing, the best hydroponics method for watermelons is ebb-and-flow system. This method only uses single reservoir to supply nutrients to multiple hydroponics units. Accordingly this will reduce the amount of time spent for monitoring the nutrient levels or adding more. Meanwhile, a floating hydroponic system is the best option for fewer or single plant growing setup.

Since watermelon vines are so large and heavy, so you can choose a sterile, inert growing medium to add some supports in keeping the roots in place as the vines grow. You can use some heavier clay pellets, pea gravel or silica stones as the growing mediums that can provide extra stability. Also you can mix those Hydroponic Watermelon growing media with sand to increase water retention. As a tip, you can apply trellis set up for this bigger and heavier sprawling fruit, which can consume enormous amount of room while growing.
